5 stars isn't enough! We absolutely love this place and so do the pups! Barkwells had treats, homemade bread, wine, and even a doggie birthday cupcake for our birthday pup, Skye...The pups loved swimming in the doggie lake and running around the large fenced-in area. We stayed in the Fisher cabin and literally never wanted to leave because it was so beautiful and well-appointed. Overall our best trip!

When I tell you, we have found our place! To all my furr-parents that travel with your babies, or want to...this is YOUR spot.
Extremely accommodating to animals. Fenced-in yards, doggie doors, doggie pillows, doggie towels, doggie bowls, poop bags, ponds for them to swim and play in, wash stations, etc. Not to mention 8 acres of fenced-in property so, if your baby happens to get get out of your [private yard]...no worries they are still safe in a fence.

Those are only a few accommodations for the furr babies, the list is endless for us humans. My favorite 3.. king-size beds, fireplace, and a jacuzzi!

I’ve lost track of how many times we have made the trip from Maine, must be over a dozen by now…This time my 95 yr old Mom came with us. On the way home she said, “In the 95 years of adventures God has granted me on this earth, seeing the joy on your dogs’ faces at Barkwells has to have been the most pleasurable of them all.”

For the elderly and/or mobility challenged, the cabins are VERY easy to navigate. All the details tended to, and the staff is hugely helpful and very respectful of space & distance during this weird covid thing…I strongly suggest making the trip from wherever you are, your dogs will thank you and who knows, it might just be the trip of a (super-long) lifetime!!

First, the Brevard location is perfect. It is very scenic; mountains everywhere in the distance, open pastures, ponds with mini waterfalls, and close to everything. The cottage is immaculate, well-decorated, and cozy.

Folks who travel with pets have experienced staying in a “pet-friendly” hotel room. Our 15-year-old Pekingese becomes highly nervous with all the scents of previous occupants. He can’t settle and we worry he will mark his territory. Not the case here. He was quite at ease indoors and had a ball exploring outdoors. We were at ease knowing the property was securely gated and fenced.
Since returning we have bragged to friends and neighbors about Barkwells. I’ve never said this before but this place is perfect.

This is the most incredible place that we have stayed while on vacation in the NC mountains...No stone was left unturned when designing this property, even when it comes to conveniences for special needs/disabled dogs - which we have two. This is such an easy review to write because I have nothing but praise for Barkwells. The staff was so friendly. We had everything we needed and then some! We stayed in Bo's Hideaway which has it's own private big back yard. The hot tub was a surprise and we loved it. We enjoyed sitting on the back porch watching the birds come to the feeder. Our black Lab Kenzie kept the squirrels away from the feeder. I enjoyed pedaling around the pond in their little boat. Our last night there I made a fire in the pit and several families and their dogs joined us around the fire. Thank you Barkwells for a great time and wonderful memories made.

Arriving on the grounds feels like stepping into heaven. The goodness at Barkwells is something you can’t put into to words or do justice to in a photo or a review; yet, it’s also something you can easily witness shining through in all the thoughtful details, from the orthopedic dog beds that seem impossibly brand new each stay, to the luxurious cotton robes, the sharpened knives, or the free and clear laundry soap. I’ve stayed here five times and keep noticing new special things each trip.

My theory about why the goodness at Barkwells is so pervasive is that the whole staff is grounded together in love for this place, love for dogs, and love for what they do. It’s rare to see a team of people so happy to work with each other, and the benefits are huge for the very lucky guests
